Bell Tower pigeon protection
In 2024, the Society identified the need to remove the ability for pigeons to nest on ledges in the archway under the Grade 1 Listed Bell Tower. Not only did the pigeon droppings cause damage to the stonework, but also they were very unsightly to passing visitors. The work was carried out in May 2025 by a local specialist contractor, who removed the existing spikes and nests from the four cornice ledges, the stonework was fully cleaned and netting was placed to cover the ledges and the roof area above. The Society persuaded the Evesham Place Board to make a grant towards the work and the church sought a large grant from the Worcester Diocese.
Drinking Fountain
The Society sometimes gets involved in projects. One of the most interesting ones is the old Drinking Fountain by the roundabout at the junction of Broadway Road with Elm Road. Some years ago, the Society arranged to have the lettering repainted so now it can be read and the historical significance of the fountain can be understood.
The next step was to bring back the old horse trough that had spent many years in the Almonry Museum Garden. The Town Council has taken on the task of planting up the trough, work that is carried out when their 'green team' redoes the planting beds on the adjacent roundabout. An information sign, replacement seat and new litter bin have been added to the area. This work was completed in 2022 and has made this corner of Bengeworth just a bit nicer. Financial support was provided by the Highways Authority, the County Councillor's special funds, Wychavon District Council and Evesham Town Council; the Society made all of the arrangements for the project and sought both the necessary consents and the funding.
Eof Statue
The statue in the Market Square near the entrance to the Natwest Bank is controversial. Whatever its merits as a work of art, it is an enigma for visitors unfamiliar with the Eof legend.
As a result of a Civic Society initiative an explanatory panel, funded jointly by the Civic and Historical Societies, has been erected at the entrance to the Square recounting the legend and explaining its significance.
